All new 2017 INFINITI QX30

The Infiniti QX30 is arriving at dealerships all over the country this fall, and the compact crossover SUV has a unique history. The QX30 is actually the result of a partnership between Infiniti and Mercedes-Benz. In fact, the QX30 shares a platform and mechanical equipment with the Mercedes GLA Class.

The story starts in 2010. Nissan/Infiniti and partner Renault have an interesting partnership in place that allows both to work with other automakers on new vehicles. In 2010, Nissan-Renault-Infiniti partnered with Mercedes-Benz on a new crossover SUV model. The result was the QX30 and GLA, which feature near-identical architecture, transmission and a 2.0L four-cylinder engine.

Yet, although they’re similar vehicles, there are key differences between the two.

QX30 vs Mercedes GLA: Similarities

Both the Infiniti QX30 and GLA feature a similar architecture. For example, their wheelbases and heights closely match, making both similar in shape and stance. The biggest difference, though, is in styling. Infiniti chose a bolder design language for the QX30, compared to the GLA’s more traditional styling.

Plus, one of the biggest similarities is the equipment they use. The QX30 and GLA both feature a 208-horsepower 2.0L turbo four-cylinder, which delivers up to 258 pound-feet of torque, as well as a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. In this regard, the QX30 and GLA differ in their tuning. Infiniti engineered a sportier suspension for the QX30.

QX30 vs Mercedes GLA: Key Differences

Although they share similarities, many differences separate the QX30 and GLA. Specifically, these differences fall in three key areas: Styling, technology and equipment. Here’s a look at those key differences:

  • Styling: Comparing both SUVs side-by-side, it might be a challenge to tell they share a platform. Infiniti has utilized a more aggressive, sportier profile for the QX30. The side creases are dramatic, the roofline tapers faster, the S-shaped C-pillar gives the exterior a distinctive appearance. The QX30’s stance is also more athletic, with lower ground clearance. Inside, the SUVs share similar dimensions, but in terms of styling and appointment, they couldn’t be more different. The dash QX30’s dash layout features dual waves, creating a tiered appearance. The GLA on the other hand uses a sparser layout. In addition, the QX30 also offers a menu of richer finishes, including real wood trim and Nappa leather upholstery.
  • Technology: Both the QX30 and the GLA feature an advanced infotainment system. In the QX30 its Infiniti’s InTouch platform, and its COMAND in the GLA. In terms of ease-of-use and configurability, InTouch has a leg up on COMAND, which is often called clunky and different to operate. Plus, the QX30 offers similar standard and available technology options compared to the GLA, including Intelligent Cruise Control, Around View Monitoring, Lane Keep Assistance and more.
  • Tuning: They may share an engine and transmission, but Infiniti has worked hard to make the QX30 perform like an Infiniti. To this end, the QX30 features a tighter, finer-tuned suspension. All models have lower ground clearance compared to the GLA, and the QX30 Sport has the tightest suspension of the bunch, offering improved handling and cornering. Plus, the QX30’s dual-clutch transmission has been optimized, as it’s more likely to hold onto gears longer and smoother throttle tip-in.
